I’m trying to learn more about my great-grandparents and this got me communicating with various archives across a ridiculous number of countries. So now I know that:
1. Lithuanian archives will request nontrivial money and give no guarantees they’ll find what you need before payment but they’ll almost definitely find it. I think they literally have everything they possibly can
2. Swiss archives will take pics of documents on their phone and email them with the “send from iPhone” signature. It’s free
3. Russian archives are full of very bored old ladies who don’t normally use computers but are eager to try. Also free unless you need and official copy
4. Germans keep so many records. At some point the person you communicate with will share that they have a nephew who lives in Ohio. In no way will it be relevant but it will be nice to know
